Dr. Sadistic and the Silverking Crybabies • Re-released December, 2002

Two amazing Aspen records crammed onto one delightful compact disc. No one else had the nerve to press this stuff so we went ahead with it. The two Crybabies albums comprised an entire punk operetta, never staged. But the story is still compelling and the libretto yet awaits a theatrical or film treatment, say the composers, Dan Sadowsky and Steve Saylor.

The Crybabies looked similar to a hard-working apres-ski band from the 80’s, The Aspen Flyers, if you squinted, but their music went far afield from apres-ski requests of the day like "Margaritaville," and "Devil Went Down to Georgia." Die-hard fans and a whole new generation can now rock out to parodies such as, "Let’s Eat the Cat," "Sitting Ducks on the Chairlift," "Condo Bondage," and the legendary, "Dead Weight in the Hot Tub."

The Aspen Sampler, Volume 2 • Released June 3, 2001

Finally another Aspen Sampler! Once again talented local artists have come together to support kids and music. Flying Dog Records is happy to bring so many wonderful people together on a single album. The Community School campuses are magical. Music is often part of the magic. The young people at both schools are a joy to behold as they sing and dance their way into our hearts. As usual, local musicians jumped at the chance to contribute their art. Many went as far as to write and perform something unique for this album. Others delved into dark closets to dust off musical gems that may otherwise have gone unheard by the public at large. The songs on this record provide a rare glimpse into the collective keyholes of some of Aspen's magical musical characters. Some are still around, some have moved on and some have died but everyone on this record has a connection to the fabric of Aspen music. This collection captures the essence of our giving community. By purchasing and listening to the Aspen Sampler you are now a part of the family. Thank you. - Steve Skinner, Producer

Freddie Fisher - Horsey Keep Your Tail Up • Released June 3, 2001

It is an honor and a pleasure to provide listeners with a taste of Aspen live music in the late 1950s. These recordings take you into the heart of the bar where Freddie Fisher, King Fisher and Walt Smith delighted audiences with their humor, creativity and musicianship.

The original tapes were tracked on reels using a small mono recorder. The tapes were fragile and fraught with many production challenges. A brilliant performance would be rolling along and the tape would run out or an audience member would handle or knock over the microphone. Sometimes the microphone was placed too close to a stomping foot or a mumbling bar patron. The recording levels would often be too high or too low. And of course, there was a shocking amount of hiss and hum. These were the days before digital recorders and high-tech gizmos.

Lucky for us, Freddie rolled those reels. And despite the limitations of recording on primitive equipment in a noisy room, the performances sparkle in a timeless way. Great care has been taken to maximize the music without compromising the integrity of the original tape. These live recordings provide a living snapshot of Aspen in an era that may have never surfaced.

If you sit back and close your eyes you may find yourself sitting at a table at the Red Onion in 1958. Someone whistles along. A cash register jingles at the bar. Freddie leans down in the middle of a clarinet solo and asks, "ArenÕt you glad you came?" The answer is a hearty yes!

Skinner and Fick have been recording and performing together since 1986. Their colorful career has put them on VH-1, MTV, the Wheeler Stage and other local dives. They have worked as musical partners in theater productions with Aspen Theatre in the Park and the Aspen Community School.

If you are having one of those days, listen to this Unity session out take from Dan McCann, who plays bass and wrote the main riff, Scott Shiflett who plays the heavy metal guitar and sings co-lead, and me, who slams away on an upside down office trash can with a toilet seat rattling on top and sings co-lead. If you are not having one of those days, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS.
